Caregivers New Year's Resolution

Caregivers New Year's Resolution

by Kristine Dwyer, LSW

In this new year, I will……….

Learn to take one hour out of each day just for myself to read, enjoy a hot bath, journal my thoughts or call a friend.

☼ 4 caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ 4 caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ 4 caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ 4 caregivers ~~~

Attend at least one caregiver support group to realize that I am not alone and that I can learn from others.

☼ ∞ caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ 4 caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ 4 caregivers ~~~

See my doctor for a physical exam and give my own health needs more priority.

☼ ∞ caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ 4 caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ 4 caregivers ~~~

Use respite care at least once a month so that I may get a break and be refreshed. I will consider using the time I have to discover the benefits of massage therapy, the joy of a musical concert, self expression in a painting class or a day at the spa to find stress relief.

☼ ∞ caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ 4 caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ 4 caregivers ~~~

Eat a balanced diet and exercise at least 20 minutes three times a week even if all I can do is walk around the house, up and down the stairs or exercise from a chair.

☼ ∞ caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ 4 caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ 4 caregivers ~~~

Seek out one new resource to support my caregiver role such as chore services, housekeeping, home care programs or delivered meals.

☼ ∞ caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ 4 caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ 4 caregivers ~~~

Try to find a way to laugh or find humor in the day amidst the sadness or discouragement I may feel.

☼ ∞ caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ 4 caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ 4 caregivers ~~~

Reach out to my family and friends to help with my loved one so that the weight of my responsibility can be lifted and shared. One way I can do this is to keep a list of needs handy so that when help is offered, I can be ready with an answer.

☼ ∞ caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ 4 caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ 4 caregivers ~~~

Seek spiritual support or personal counseling to gain perspective of my life, clarity of my role and keep my mental health in check.

☼ ∞ caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ 4 caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ 4 caregivers ~~~

Finally, by focusing on these resolutions, I will be able to reap the rewards of caregiving, maintain balance in my life and provide care longer for my loved one.

☼ ∞ caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ 4 caregivers ~~~  ☼ ∞ 4 caregivers ~~~

Caregiver Tools, Hints, "Life Hacks" for the Holidays

Address Caregiver Stress, Before You’re a Mess!, caregiving, caregiver, respite care

Found this awesome article this morning on caregivertwopointoh.wordpress.com/ regarding handling the extra stress that caregivers experience during the holidays and how to prepare for a more seamless season.  To read the entire article please click the link below.  Enjoy

"The holidays are a highly anticipated, but often stressful, season. For many, our financial, social, and physical demands increase significantly as the holidays rapidly approach. Buying gifts for others, entertaining guests, and making travel arrangements are common added responsibilities at this time of year. If you are a caregiver for a person with dementia, it may be difficult to juggle these additional tasks alongside your routine care provision.
Interactions with family members may add another layer of stress or possibly contention. Family members that visit for the holidays may be taken aback by the changes they observe in the person with dementia. They may be unsure of how to respond to the person with Alzheimer’s, and they may not use appropriate techniques. For others, suspicions that a family member has a memory loss disorder could be surfaced for the first time at a holiday gathering. Other issues, such as the person’s safety or whether he/she should be living alone, may not be addressed until the family comes together. Members of the family may disagree and conflict could ensue.
Little research has been done about caregiving during the holiday season, although it has been acknowledged by many as a uniquely stressful phenomenon. Below are some helpful hints on how to best prepare for and survive this special time of year. Happy Holidays everyone!
Prepare Family Members in Advance
The holidays are full of emotions, so it can help to let guests know what to expect before they arrive. Initiating the conversation early will also allow family members an opportunity to surface any questions or concerns they may have."

Extreme Coupon Shows Giving Couponer A "Bad Name"

When you tell someone you are a couponer many times the first comment is "like those couponers on Tv,"   and you are thinking something along the lines of H--- to the NO.  Then one may feel obliged to explain their coupon usage and still get "the stink eye."

As a group, maintaining the utmost integrity in our lives and especially in transactions I think we can live down this negative stereotype.  I read articles where some who have been shown on extreme shows are coached to make a huge haul for TV when in their everyday shopping excursions they do not empty the shelves.  I do not believe that most couponers are selfish wolves hungry to take all of the goodies for themselves.  On the contrary, most are stretching the family dollars and practicing good home economics.

Below referenced please find an article on restoring integrity and share it with anyone you know who may have fallen off the integrity bandwagon due to hyper exuberance after viewing too much reality couponing.

7 Steps for Restoring Integrity in Your Life

 Steps to Restore Integrity/Wholeness
  • Make a list of the 10 ways you are currently not in integrity
  • Get to the source of each and every item, resolve all fully
  • Make a commitment to start living in integrity, as you see it
  • Let go of at least 10 shoulds, coulds, woulds, oughts, and wills
  • Stop spending time with people who are not the best models
  • Eliminate adrenaline and other unhealthy “rushes” in your life
  • Let go of everything that you know is not good for you

JCPenney Black Friday Sale Starts at 8pm Thanksgiving Night

This year JCPenney is offering coupons and doorbuster savings. Ad Scan to be coming soon.

Unpopular CEO Ron Johnson is out and coupons are back!  Felt as though  Johnson didn't respect the store, the hair dressers (many having their deals changed are "gone with the wind),"  nor its core customers and tried to turn into something it never has been or will be.  Good riddance!!!!!!   Will give them another chance this holiday season (except for the salon).  Hope that the heavy, good quality linens are back soon.

Preheat 425

1    can (16.3 oz) Pillsbury® Grands!® Flaky Layers refrigerated biscuits

Preheat oven to 425.  Line  baking sheet with parchment paper.  Using small round cookie cutter, cut hole in center of each biscuit. Brush dough generously with vegetable oil on all sides. Bake in the oven for about 6 minutes.  Much easier & less calories & mess than frying!

For Vanilla Glaze:

cup powdered sugar
1 tsp
vanilla extract
tablespoons milk
Red and yellow food color paste

Sprinkles if desired
In small bowl, mix powdered sugar, milk and vanilla until thick glaze forms. Remove half of the glaze to another bowl. Add 1 dot red food color paste to 1 bowl of glaze; stir until incorporated. Add more food color, if necessary, until desired pink shade is reached. Tint second bowl of glaze to desired shade with yellow food color.

For the chocolate glaze:

4 ounces semisweet chocolate, roughly chopped

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 cup powdered sugar

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

4 tablespoons evaporated milk, plus more to thin if needed

Multi-colored sprinkles, for garnish

For the chocolate glaze, cook the chocolate and butter in a small saucepan over medium-low heat until ingredients are melted. Add the powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk and whisk vigorously to combine. If it seems to thick, add more evaporated milk, a tablespoon at a time, until desired texture is reached. Remove the pan from heat.

Caregivers Bill Of Rights

A Caregiver's Bill of Rights
By Jo Horne
I have the right:

To take care of myself. This is not an act of selfishness. It will give me the capability of taking better care of my loved one.

To seek help from others even though my loved ones may object. I recognize the limits of my own endurance and strength.

To maintain facets of my own life that do not include the person I care for, just as I would if he or she were healthy. I know that I do everything that I reasonably can for this person, and I have the right to do some things just for myself.

To get angry, be depressed, and express other difficult feelings occasionally.

To reject any attempts by my loved one (either conscious or unconscious) to manipulate me through guilt, and/or depression.

To receive consideration, affection, forgiveness, and acceptance for what I do, from my loved ones, for as long as I offer these qualities in return.

To take pride in what I am accomplishing and to applaud the courage it has sometimes taken to meet the needs of my loved one.

To protect my individuality and my right to make a life for myself that will sustain me in the time when my loved one no longer need my full-time help.

To expect and demand that as new strides are made in finding resources to aid physically and mentally impaired persons in our country, similar strides will be made towards aiding and supporting caregivers.

  4. 2/3 cup vegetable oil
